My friend is saying that if you take any instrument and use a digital pedal you are playing a midi instrument. To me this didn't sound right since midis are like video game music and a digital pedal is like a regular pedal but with more options in one pedal. Can some one clear this up for me please?

Thanks,
Ezro

this is a pretty confusing subject.....yikes....

"The term "MIDI sound" has often been used as a synonym for "bad sounding computer music", but this reflects a misunderstanding: MIDI does not define the sound, only the control protocol. The confusion has probably arisen because the quality of the General MIDI synthesis software and instrument banks included with some personal computers in the 1980s and 1990's could, perhaps, have been a little better."

Here's the article link, but it's mega long

If the digital pedal has a "midi out" then you could say it's a midi instrument, but a normal digital pedal is just mixing a digitized effect (like reverb) with the incoming signal. A midi output is digital signal that a synth can use to create any sound. It can make the note sound like a sax or a piano or any wierd sound.

I don't have time to go into detail at the moment, but basically you are correct and your friend is wrong :-)
