Remember when songs were dominated by ripping guitar solos and musical talent? What has happened to the music industry lately...it seems like musical ability has nothing to do with a music career now.
Who else agrees with me?

They are still alive and well, but deeply hidden in the bowels of the music industry. One of the last true 'heroes' Zakk Wylde recently lamented this disturbing trend in one of his recent interviews. Quote "It seems nobody really studies the instrument anymore. Dimebag and me would go out to some local clubs to check out some of the bands and nobody ever took a solo. We would sit back and laugh and say "Are we the only two motherfuckers left that can get from the low E string to the high E and back safely....more than once.......!!" I agree with you somewhat, but there are still a few out there but not as many as before..for example...
Zakk Wylde
Jerry Cantrell
Marty Freidman
John Sykes
Glen Tipton
could go on.....but you're are right, it seems record companies are less impressed with talent and more on how looks and how marketable you are going to be.

Yeah! I'm with you! Time to start a music revolution!

What has happened is that the studios have become too caught up in trying to recreate past successes, and are not interested in creativity or innovation or talent. They just want someone who looks good on tv or sounds like Creed. Then they re-release the same-sounding crap over and over again because it worked once ten years ago. It is ironic, because the more they play it "safe," the more money they lose.

Mtv hasn't helped the situation any. They USED to feature up-and-coming talents, alternative rock, new music, and such... now they pretty much just show boring tv shows over and over. What little time they have for music gets geared toward the top 20. Boring. Same thing for the radio. Most of the are OWNED by the music industry now. So they just play the same top 40 songs over and over. So they don't provide any motivation for the studios to try something different. Who is going to play something different now? There is no avenue for it.... except the internet. The internet might ultimately be the studio system's doom.

Finally, there is American Idol. I will admit that some of these kids have GREAT voices. But the ability to sing does not make you a good musician or a great songwriter. It does not matter how good these "talents" are, they all ultimately sound the same in the end because their records have the same fake music, boring lyrics, and ripped off melodies. Yawn.

The music industry never had anything to do with talent and ability. Just look at who was huge in the 60's...Peter, Paul, & Mary..70's the Eagles...80's Paula Abdul. There are still kick-a$$ guitar bands out there. You just don't hear them on the radio or see them on TV. Guitar rock will never die. Check these bands out to hear some of the best guitar music of the last couple of years. Peace \m/

I do. I think that the various Gods of the Guitar are simply waiting for the listening public to wake up to the whole pre-packaged "Idol" style format and show it the door.

Sure call me nostalgic , but back in the 70's and 80's if you wanted guitar , you sure as hell got it : Jimmy Page , Carlos Santana, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Stevens ("Top Gun" theme) KISS , Iron Maiden , early Metallica, Status Quo, Dire Straits, Yngwie Malmsteen the list is endless.

And even if there are guitarists that have a similar talent these days , do the music companies and conglomerate broadcasters endorse and support such talent ?

Of course not.

I agree with you 100%. I love guitar solos and they're not around anymore. Being a good musician doesn't matter anymore, sadly.. When I read something about a band, it's usually "OMG so and so is so hot! That's why I love this band!!!" That's why I don't listen to today's music. Music (especially rock) from the 70's and 80's is way better than today's music to me. And I'm only 15.
