Everyone knows this (or should know it). But you have to look at history a little more deeply than that. Johnson, who was responsible for escalating the Vietnam war, had a lot of doubts about that project, but felt that he had no choice but to commit more US troops for political reasons. In other words, he was worried about the reaction from the right wing (mostly Republicans) if he were to pull out of Vietnam. So Nixon, as one of the party's leaders, has to take some responsibility for that. Nixon also has to take responsibility for the fact that he prolonged the war unnecessarily for four more years, and signed a peace treaty in 1973 that gave us almost exactly the same terms that were available in 1968.
