He was crowned as a Roman emperor, the successor of Caesar Augustus and Justinian. It was intended that he should be a Western Roman Emperor and colleague of the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Emperors who ruled in Constantinople in 800. This was in AD 800. It was not the Holy Roman Empire, which was established about AD 1000 by Otto I.
