Depends on the type of goldfish you choose. Some gold fish can get 4" while others can get to 36". Any small gold fish can live in a 5 gallon tank, however as they grow, the tank must grow with them since they will not stop growing. Knowing this a 1" or 2" gold fish can live happily in a 5 gallon for just under a year or so, again depends on the type of fish.
a 10 gallon with a few 1" fish are fine. this will be a good home for a couple of years, again they will need to be rehoused once they reach a certain size.
Knowing this you can start with a 5 and move up, or just go with a 10, 20 etc. and that will be that.

If it is just 1 gold fish you are thinking od buying, you could purchase a 5 gallon tank. Remember 1 inch of fish = 1 gallon of water. And no dont put 5 goldfishes in 5 gallons because fish grow. If you buy a 10 gallon tank you could put 2 or 3 small goldfish inside. 20 gallons even more comfortable for the goldfish. I recommend that you dont put any other type of fish other than goldfish in your tank. Goldfishes dont need a heater and other fishes do.

10 gallons if you plan on upgrading within a year, if not then just get a 20 gallon. This is only if you want 1 fancy tailed goldfish, if you want 2 then you will have to double the sizes and if you want 3 then you would have to triple and so on. Of course this is if you want the fish to thrive and have a chance to live the 20 years they are able to.

If you just have one fish I recommend giving him like a 10 gallon tank. But you see people that have them in 1 gallon tanks, and personally I really don't think that is enough room for them to swim around and live in. My motto is "the bigger-the better" :)

If you mean to be healthy and happy all it's life I wouldn't suggest anything less than a 15 gallon and a 20 would be much, much better. That's for fancy goldfish. A common or comet goldfish will need far more space than that. Given room, a fancy goldfish will get to about 7-8" long not including the fins.

Goldfish can live in a fish bowl, but I recommend a little bit more room than that depending on the size of the goldfish. You can go to a large pet store (Petsmart, Petco, etc.), I have seen that they have anything from 1 gallon tanks to 5 gallon tanks for fish.

Depends on how big the goldfish is.
ALL goldfish need gentle aeration (goldfish need alot of oxygen, hence the aeration) and need to have a clean tank (or bowl, which also needs aeration)
They make cute little tanks about 1 gallon in size, some of those tanks come with their own filtration setup. Be aware that only little goldfish can live in this small tank (two goldfish -- at MOST)
Every tank or bowl needs a screen top that is secure enough to keep the fish from jumping out.
Please be aware that some goldfish grooow REAL big, so if your little goldfish starts outgrowing his or her tank, you ned to get them a new setup.
I usually kept my fish in 5, 10 and 15 gallon tanks, depending on their sizre.

The smallest they can live in is a 5 gal. only 1 can be in a 5 gal. but then you would have to move him in a bigger tank after a while so I'd go with a 10 gal. You would need them in with a filter, too.
