Someone gave me potted tulips. They've already bloomed and it looks like the petals are just about ready to start falling off. I live in the upper northeast and there's still snow on the ground. There's supposed to be one more snow tomorrow (4/12) and I think there's a rule about when you can plant bulbs.

The tulips I got last year are in the garage, dead and they're still in they pot they came in! Please help these tulips live!!

lol, take the ones in the pot in the garage along with the new ones you just got and plant them today, regardless of the snow.... assuming you can get through the dirt.

I used to live in the Greater Detroit Region and all bulbed plants seem to LOVE the cold, in fact the recommended planting time for bulbs is in the fall just *so* they can freeze.

Bulbs, also, so long as they don't rot from excessive moisture will keep almost indefinately. I bet if you took those old, dead bulbs and planted them, they'd start shooting up again too...

You've got nothing to worry about, just let them do their own thing and you'll be all set....

Pull the plant out of the pot. Plant it in your yard (after the ground thaws). Try planting the tulips that you have had in your garage, they may bloom next spring too!
Or you can shake off the dirt and put the bulbs in a dry place and plant them in September/October this fall. They need to be in the ground before it freezes and they do need some water right after you plant them.

Good Luck!

When the green part of the tulips starts to die off, remove the bulbs from the soil. Keep them in a dry location where they wont' rot until the fall. Plant them outside in the fall. They will come up next spring.
