They were using GPS, the issue is if Iran can claim the whole waterway they bottle up all gulf shipping from Iraq, that is why they were desperate for the UK to agree that those are "Iranian" waters, it was also provocative because there are many factions in Iran that don't support Ahminejhad, and had he gone to NYC he could have been arrested, so he cancelled his appearance he had so insisted on having at the UN. If you stray into foreigtn waters, the normal proceedure is a warning and escort back out. But this was a UN mission, the UN should have spoken the loudest, but as usual meowed, France with it's 10% stake in Iran's nuclear program, not to ment France, Germany and norway having a stake in Iran's oilfields, (in addition to China and russia of course) kept the EU from doing anything more than a "strongly worded" suggestion Iran release the hostages. This kidknapping and hostage taking, even off ships, is an old tradition in this part of the world, it's how you get what you want. Compliments are owed to teh two marines who did not crack, while understandable the others did, they shouldn't be rewarded for it, and their commanders have a lot of explaining to do as far as their not having protection to have prevented this. There should be no Iranian navy anyways, it's not like they have to worry about Iraq anymore.
