We just got a small RES in as a recue/rehab. Any special instructions on their care? What do they need diet wise? He'll probably only be with us a couple of weeks while his wounds heal. Just want to make sure he has optimum condition to heal quickly.

Do you mean red-eared slider? I'll assume so.

They are primarily fish eaters, but I always fed mine small fish (shiners, goldfish, etc.) and supplemented that with Repto-Min pellets or similar brand of aquatic reptile diet and mine always did fairly well. Make sure it has a dry basking area around 90 degrees or so and that it can choose whether to bask or be in the water. It will also need a full-spectrum/UV light and well-filtered water if you are keeping it indoors. Good luck.

The secrets to a happy RES are:

- Big tanks- it almost cannot be too big!
- Good temps- water from 75-80F, basking sites around 90F
- Clean water, which usually takes a BIG filter
- Good light, either sunlight (unfiltered by glass or plastic) or a good UVB lamp
- Good diet, about 1/2 high-quality pellets, and the rest worms, bugs, snails, krill, shrimp, etc.
