The Adelie penguin, pygoscelis adeliae is not only a different species but a different genus from the Little penguin, eudyptula minor. Adelies breed only in Antarctica but not on the ice. They make their nests of small pebbles on exposed rock surfaces. The only penguin to breed on the ice is the Emperor. Little penguins, also called little blue penguins and fairy penguins, are the smallest of the penguins and breed in burrows in Australia and New Zealand.

Royal penguins differ from macaroni penguins by having white rather than black faces. Royals breed only on Macquarie Island. Their status has changed over the years, they have been considerd to be separate species, eudyptes schlegeli and e chrysolophus; separate subspecies e chrysolophus shlegeli and e c chrysolophus. Now they are considered to be the same species as white faced birds are found with predominantly black faced birds and vice versa.
