From what I've seen don't waste your time w/ the 64 bit editions yet. You won't notice much of a difference except finding it hard to find drivers and apps to take advantage of it.

My personal favorite distros are:

Kubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake)
Single LiveCD

OpenSUSE 10.2
5 CD set not including the optional non-OSS CD

PClinuxOS .93a (aka Big Daddy)
single live CD

Normally the ones with multiple CD's include the proprietary drivers for some of the hardware like nVidia and ATI graphic adapters and many of the multimedia codecs that you need to download with the other ones if you want them. The other use of the extra CD's is they include a lot of the software often needed to be downloaded from the others repositories. I rather get it fresh from the repositories since after a few months the software on the CD's will need updating anyway.....

You'll find we all have different opinions on which we like the most but at the core we are all willing to help out if you have questions.

I truly ought to assert flow for LinuxMint 9 important. It has a experience it really is in route of residing house windows than Ubuntu has, and the menu is the perfect I truly have ever used. I truly were using Mint because that version 5, and positioned it really common to evolve to and use on a general foundation. Open workplace is protected on the device, as well as Firefox for surfing. My computing device has an Intel twin-center at a million.73GHz and 1GB RAM. It runs tremendous, yet am considering including extra RAM. I propose the Gnome computer, and in case you are able to, get the DVD version (it really is equipped in 32- and sixty 4-bit, be positive to get the single you want.)

With linux you typically download a Live iso, burn it and start your computer with the disc in the rom drive. Isolinux usually configures a live desktop on your system. You can keep repeating this process with different iso's until you find one you like. Furthermore linux apps are maintained in different repositories on the web and a package manager is usually installed on your desktop. You browse available app packages that suit your needs and install.

I use the Standard x86 version. They do have a 64 Bit but, we have not seen it much different.
You can run the live CD to see how things work, it slow.
If, you decide to install, you may want to do a Dual Boot at first until you learn. When you install just let it do it and it be easy.
