I'm really interested in getting a sabertooth pirahnah, but I want to know if anyone has owned one and if theres anything I need to know. I know that they're ultra aggressive, but I was wondering if they were hard to keep alive, if they can only have certain plants or if they are prone to disease. I want to make sure I know everything before buying an overly expensive fish.

hopefully that pic works...
This is the only pic I could find of the fish I want. And as far as pirahnas go this type is abnormally aggressive.

Well, there isn't a fish with a widely known common name of sabertooth piranha, but of course piranha are kept by many aquarium keepers. The first thing I would suggest you do is to be sure they are legal in your area as they are illegal in much of the US.

There are a variety of different piranha species, some much easier to keep than others, but they all share some traits that you will need to plan for. First, they are not aggressive at all. Piranha are fairly shy fish that need to be kept in a group like most other tetras. That's item one to deal with, a group. They get fairly large and need plenty of swimming room. Piranha aren't for you unless you have a 100+ gallon tank to devote to them. Next, consider that generally they are jumpers. You'll really have to secure that tank to prevent problems. Also, they can get rather expensive to feed. Meat eating Piranha are scavangers and eat mostly fish and injured animals, that can run up quite a bill for a group of them. Here's a link to a forum that will give you much more info about them. You need to join the forum if you want to ask questions, but it's free and I have never had a problem from it.

Hope that helps.

Most piranhas need a steady supply of live food - like gold fish or guppies and when fully grown maybe an occasional mouse or several grasshoppers. The axiom is they won't eat it unless it moves. Plants - no issues and piranhas are relatively disease free - keep them warm 78 degrees f.

I am sorry. I have never heard of it. It is interesting to know that there is such a specie.
