growing up this was an everyday problem easily solved... it used to cost less than $2 to fix it...now maybe 3 or 4 chevy dealership buy replacement shifting rod bushings this takes the play out of the shifter next under the hood find the steering column on the column are 2 shifter forks this area wears out and the selectors spread out there are 3 pieces there 1st and reverse a selector plate and 2nd and 3rd put truck in neutral grab that assy by hand and adjust everything so that they are even..get a big pair of channel locks and squeeze the three pieces back together your trying to make the top and bottom levers come closer to the center selector plate if the nubs on the center plate aren't worn to bad this should make it shift like new

i own a shop and if the column is not to badly worn out on this one you can adjust the linkage on it and make it shift a lot better,if its real loose there by the where the linkage hooks on to the rods from the transmission, you may have to replace some of the bushings to get the slack out of it,also you may have to pull the column out and pull the shaft out of it ,and put bearings in it,when those things get worn it does make them hang up all the time,i have rebuilt a lot of those columns though and its not a bad job,it cost about 100 bucks for all the parts to make that one like new again, good luck with it hope this helps.

dodge man is right on the money but remember this......always shift in sequence. never go from third to first without going to second when you downshift or if going to reverse always go to first gear before going to reverse
