Why is everyone blasting this guy with "freedom of religion" and all of that. He wasn't making a negative comment torwards Shaq, he was just asking us if we knew that he was Muslim. This shows that you people are inclined to think negatively of Muslims and make stupid generalizations about them and that conflicts your personal beliefs now that you find out your very favoritest basketball player happens to pray to Allah.
To answer the question, no, I did not know that he was Muslim. I find it pretty interesting. I guess a lot of people never knew this because he doesn't really wear it on his shoulder, like you said.

Did you know that Shaquille Oneal is Muslim?
I think so mainly because he doesn't wear his religion on his shoulder.

O'Neal, whose mother is a Baptist and stepfather a Muslim, has not formally announced affiliation with a specific faith. However, in 2002, the Los Angeles Times identified O'Neal as being Muslim and quoted him as saying, "It's a Muslim thing," with regard to the greetings he exchanged with opposing player Hedo Turkoglu before each game of that year's Western Conference Finals series. The newspaper also quoted Turkoglu as saying that he was not surprised at the gesture from O'Neal "because Muslim people support each other."

No actually I never knew that. I remember hearing his step-father was muslim, but never heard that he was. I also remember that in his mother's native language from Africa his name Shaquille means "big man".

Yes..and so what!!!! I'm baptist. It doesn't matter. I look at him due to the content of his character.
To the person who answered after me...I could care less about someone's religion, race, or sexuality. That's why we as a Americans have the problem we do today. There are too many people who judge others based on those things like you seem to think.
The guy is a great basketball player so get off your soap box!!!!

no i did not but that is a good point. i have no problems with any religions but it is, in my opinion, nice when a person doesnt make a huge deal about religion to gain publicity. it seems like shaq worships how he does out of his heart and doesnt need the attention that many people do.

I think there are far more important issues regarding Shaq than whether or not he is a Muslim. The fact that he has a college degree from LSU. The fact that he is financially secure far past basketball, because of his success as a business man; that he takes law enforcement seriously for the message he can send to young kids through being a peace officer himself; that he is a strong family man, a loving, devoted husband and father. And, lastly, a helluva fine basketball center. Who cares about his religious faith?
