I bought a 30 gallon tank with a 7" iridescent shark in it. Now that I have been learning some things about fish, I really think the shark needs a new bigger home. I have all the aquarium I can handle so I want to send him to a good home. Where do I start looking? How big a tank does his new owner need to have? How do I find someone? It's sad to see him bumping his nose on the tank sides all the time.

This fish should have a tank with a footprint of 48"x18" at least (standard size 75 or 90 gallons). This will take it through several years, but eventually this is a fish that needs a truly massive tank.

I would post him on craigslist since it's a busy website and free. I would also post on any fish forum with a trading post, and consider placing an ad in a newspaper or buy/sell magazine.

Failing anything else, around here the fish store will take one in and even give half its retail worth in store credit, but from my understanding not all area's have shops that would do this - doesn't hurt to ask though.

Sharks are very curious fish and like to wander. With a shark, you want to go over the regular mesurement standards. May sharks grow over a foot long depending on the species. I would go with a minimum of 50-80 gallons alone. Make sure it is more long than tall. Try advertising in your local newspaper's classified adds. You never know. Some family owned pet stores may buy them off of you, but not always.

Many pet shops are happy to take in large specimens like yours. Call around to a few local stores and see who might be interested for a display tank or for a customer that really loves large fish. They will usually give you some store credit for the fish and will certainly like getting the call instead of you just showing up with your fish.

a full grown ID shark would need about an 8ft tank
your best bet is to return him to a reputable fish store as they may have contacts that are able to care for such a monster fish.

Irridescent sharks will always bump into the glass. They have poor vision and are always bumping into things. They cannot see the glass. They're schooling fish and see their reflection in the glass and think it is another shark to swim with.
