A lot of firewalls aren't currently compatible with Vista, especially the 64-bit version. I have 64-bit Vista Ultimate and I am a bit of a computer-nerd so my technique should be relatively safe:
- Use a router instead of a modem to connect to the internet. This way, nearly all (if not all) unsolicited traffic is blocked at the router, so you don't really need a software firewall.
- Use Vista's built in firewall along with using a router as a hardware firewall.
This way you should be safe. If you don't want to get a router (although I can't see why you wouldn't) then I suppose you'll just have to trust the built in firewall or find a free one on the net. But I seriously recommend using a router. It requires no set up: any NAT router is a hardware firewall by default.

One of the ways that you can protect your computer against Internet attacks is to implement a firewall solution between the Internet and your computer and private network. This is becoming more and more important as people store personal information on their computers such as bank account numbers, credit card data, tax information, and so on. Not implementing a firewall makes this information accessible to attackers.
If not, try the links below
By implementing a firewall, you can close the door to your local computer and private network so intruders can not get in, but you can still get out.
If you are looking for a fast, easy firewall solution, you can take advantage of the Windows Firewall included with Windows Vista. The firewall should be enabled by default when Vista is installed. You can verify or re-enable the firewall using the steps listed below.
Click Start and click Control Panel.
Click the Security option.
Click Windows Firewall.
The Windows Firewall should be listed as “on”. If not, click Change Settings.
Click On (recommended).
Click OK.

Vista is the work of Satan, you really should have left it at least 6 months before getting it.
The Windows Firewall built into Vista is considerably better than that which can be found in Windows XP, so you could actually stick with it for the time being. Aside from that it's mostly betas available right now, such as TrendMicro Internet Security suite, which is in a free public beta.
Give AVG Free Edition a go for an Antivirus, also try AVG Antispyware as well.
I think the new Zonealarm firewall supports Vista:

1.Get a router.
2. Use google's preview Toolbar. The blocker is great!
Note: I used Zone Alarm but my boyfriend hates it. It is a very complicated program. Everyone that uses the PC has to know how to use Zone Alarm properly and with it's complexities I doubt this. Stick with a router/firewall.
