PST is the data file of Microsoft Outlook and NSF is the data file of Lotus Notes. Both file includes emails, contacts, calendars, tasks, notes, journals and entire data. Whenever the data size gets grown up, both application provides Auto Archive functions to backup old data in a separate file so that main file can not be affected. However you want to swap data information between both file or want to shift lotus notes archive file to outlook data file then external tools are also available those helps properly in this regard.

They are storage formats for Outlook information. Yes, I backup my Outlook .pst files: for example. I have two laptops, I maintain them as mirror images. This summer one of them went south (grrr...) I had to rebuild it (grrr...) It was very handy, after I re-installed all the software, to be able to take all the .pst files from Outlook on the one computer and import, for example, the Contacts, on the rebuilt computer! Did it in about a minute and a half! I back them up to a simple thumb drive, weekly, using File--> Export (Of course, a thumb drive suffices because I don't download much email: it stays online...)

My favourite technical site for definitions - whatis.com, lists PST files as follows: PST file

A PST file is a personal folder file in Microsoft Outlook. In Outlook, the storage limit for a single user's .PST file is 2 GB. PST stands for personal storage.

If you go to your "Start" button, and click on "search" for "Files and Documents", enter *.pst - you will find your Outlook PST database under /documents and settings/users/"your name"/Application Data/Local/Microsoft/Outlook/personal.pst. (You may need to enable the search to include "hidden files and folders".) This file - "personal.pst" can be copied to an external storage device such as an external Hard Drive, or burned to a CD. Hope this helps!
Tony
