In the late 13th c. England there were 3000 landholders out of a population of about 6 million. Not everyone else was a serf, some who worked the land were free peasantry but they were little better off than serfs, and there was also a small number of craftsmen, merchants and clergy on manors. London reached a population of 80,000 before the black death, and there was probably an equal number in the towns and cities in the rest of England.
