I've only heard a little of his work but feel I should hear more.

Definitely, he's ace, never mind ruddy Elvis, Bowie for me is the king. Where to start? Try these songs:

Heroes
Life on Mars
Starman
Changes
Ziggy Stardust
Jean Genie
Space Oddity
Ashes to Ashes
Sound and Vision

Probably the Changesbowie compilation from around 1990 is a sound place to start that will give you the classic stuff.

If you then want to try albums, depending on what era you want to go for (stick to the 70's as a general rule..):

Hunky Dory for singer songwriter/early glam stuff (his best in my opinion for what it's worth..).

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars; if you want the glam era hits.

Low if you are looking for his late 70's more ambient, stuff, definitely the best of the three 'Berlin' era albums which also include Lodger and Heroes.

Anyway, hope that helps and you develop an enduring love of the great man himself, Dame David of Bowie...

Probably the most recognized Bowie songs:

"Ziggy Stardust"
"Changes"
"Space Oddity"
"Suffragette City"
"Young Americans"
"China Girl"
"Under Pressure" - duet with Freddie Mercury

That being said, 'Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust' & 'Hunky Dory' are both incredible classic rock albums. Solid all the way thru. I would definately recommend them if you start to get into Bowie.

Starting with Space Oddity then through his "Glitter Rock" period (Suffragette City) & (Ziggy's Stardust) through his mainstream period (All the Young Dudes) & (Young Americans) then to a contemporary period (Fame & Golden Years) and then Popular Style (Let's Dance & China Girl),Bowie has been a pioneer--copied by numerous imitators.

I really liked all of his songs, but especially "Fame". It is a great song with a Funk Guitar sound. It really shows off Bowie's fantastic vocal range (around four octaves).
