People have different learning styles, so what works for me may not work for you, but here's what I'd suggest:
1) Get yourself a good reference that lists all the php commands with their options and syntax, and refer to it constantly.
2) Download a simple script and get it running. Figure out how it works and then how to make simple changes in its output. There are some online tutorials you can use as a source, e.g. http://us2.php.net/tut.php .
3) Pick a simple project and write a php page to do it. Don't try to do everything at once - start at the "hello world" level and add features one at a time.

There is no way to learn PHP easily , but i can tell you that just start with the basics, do it over and over, make sure you understand each step, and soon enough you will know all the basics. After that it should be much "Easier" for you to learn the advanced stuff. Personally it took me about one whole year to really know everything there is to know about PHP. And i can tell you now it wasn't tht easy. But with enough dedication and time, You can be an expert as long asd you keep at it. Good luck !

Like all programming languages you need to learn what each part of it does to use it correctly. It is no good just copying scripts without understanding what they do. The php manual is so detailed that it is one of the easiest to use, but understanding is the problem.
