there will always be grunt jobs that a person can get with a high school diploma or less. they will be the lowest, dirtiest jobs, but someone will have to do them.

I doubt that a degree will become a minimum requirement any time in the near future, but if there are mulitple applicants for a position, some with degrees and some without, the people with the degrees might have an edge even if the job requirements don't need advanced training.
