-polyester clothes (early 70s),

In the Western world, the focus shifted from the social activism of the sixties to social activities for one's own pleasure, save for environmentalism, which continued in a very visible way. The seventies were characterized by the writer Tom Wolfe as the "Me Decade."
Major developments of the sexual revolution included the awareness of the impact of contraceptive pills on social-interactional relationships, and an increase in divorce rates, single parent households, and pre-marital sex. By the end of the decade the feminist movement had helped change women's working conditions. The Gay Rights movement became prominent, and the hippie culture, which started in the 1960s, peaked and carried on through the end of the decade. The United States' withdrawal from Vietnam and the resignation of Richard Nixon helped bring about a sense of malaise.
The United States experienced recession, but the economy of Japan prospered. The economies of many third world countries continued to make steady progress in the early 1970s because of the green revolution. They might have thrived and become stable in the way that Europe recovered after the war through the Marshall Plan; however, their economic growth was slowed by the oil crisis.

I looked really great back then, it was a little more mellow than now The music was great Nixon was President stuff was a lot cheaper I think gas was about 60cents a gallon it only cost 10cents to use a pay phone you could still buy penny candy drugs were not so easily assessable as they are now It was really a big deal to know someone who smoked marijuana a lot more kick back than today's world lots of lazy days and people with big dreams If i had to sum it up I would just say it was more peaceful in general. (speaking of my environment). OH yeah! I forgot it was fun to watch the guys drag race on Saturday's on the main streets my sister and i would sneak out our window to watch we only got caught once but we did it for years.

(Tongue in cheek...) I was born in '73, so for me it was pretty much eat, poop, sleep...eat, poop, sleep...at the beginning. It got better as playing in the sand box, learning to ride a bike, little league, and all those other cool things came along.

Point is...it depends on your perspective. Someone in their 50's or 60's during the 70's would have a very different perspective than someone who was in their teens or 20's at the time.

This is the second time in a week this question has been asked. The 70's was a decade of unrest where we were still mired in Vietnam until 1973, where we had the Watergate scandal, where the negative forces ran our schools so that academic achievement was ridiculed, where we had disco, sex, and drugs anywhere, anytime, any place, where interest rates and gasoline prices soared under Carter, and where we suffered moral decline as a nation. It was the most horrific decade of any of the seven I have lived.

Chow!!

From my perspective life sucked...but I was in my 20's...so that's probably not fair and balanced.
the ending debacle of Vietnam War
vicious fights between career women and stay at home moms
first gas crisis
Three Mile Island
second gas crisis
disco dancing
...I'm going to go have a little glass of medicine now, excuse me
