From ages 4 to 8, I spent all my time divided between soccer, ballet, gymnastics and tap, but my mom lost her job and we couldn't afford to continue any of my out-of-school activities. I'm almost 17 now, and I have the money start taking dance lessons again, and I would really like to join a cheerleading or dance team in college the year after next. Is it too late for me to start again?

I would have to say "NO it is not too late" Because I did not start cheerleading until college, and I made it on the squad. I had always been involved with dance and gymnastics all my life. When I went to college I wanted to try something new. Cheerleading, for me, was not a big stretch. I could tumble already and I had partner experience from dancing, so working co-ed in college was nothing new for me. I loved it! It was fun and it was challenging, and now I can say that I was a cheerleader...along with all the other stuff I've done!

Find someone who is already on the squad and get some tips and help from them so you know what you have to work on for try-outs. I worked with some of the guys on the varsity squad to learn how to do all the stunts required for try-outs, then once I made it on the squad. I worked with a pro squad throughout the summer to improve on more tumbling and stunt work.

In my opinion i think that for cheerleading at the age of 17 it might be a little late for it, cause once you go off to college they expect you to know alot about it. But i mean if you want to you can start practicing right now since you have done alot of other things. and for the dance team, yeah, totally go for it you have the experience why not try it out.

If you've never done cheerleading before, it's going to be hard for you to qualify for the squad. There are usually pretty tough try-outs, and they expect you to know a lot of the moves already.

Dancing, however, is another matter. You should be able to get into some classes now to brush up on your fundamentals, and then move on up to more advanced routines, and find a club or team to join when you get to college.

Even though you are still young if you have never really cheered before, especially on a competition squad, or high schoold squad, you might have some trouble. Go for it though just be able to do every kind of jump, split, and kick. Make sure you can yell as well as cheer. You should be fit, flexible and have a decent amount of dance experience. It also wouldnt hurt if you still know how to tumble. Good Luck!

No, it is not too late. If you have any interest you want to experience, by all means go for it, girl. You could well regret it later, if you don't give it a try.
