The amazing thing is that Castro has defied the United States and survived longer than the Soviet Union or any other world leader, all why occupying a tiny island right of the coast of the United States.
Sure some people leave Cuba to come to the US, but hey, even more people leave Mexico to come to the US and Mexico is a democracy.
The funniest thing of all is that it is the US' own fault. The US, by trying to isolate Cuba has made people believe that Cuba has power, that the US fears Cuba. That means Castro must be a powerful ruler if the US is so scared of them. As a result, Castro's legacy will continue past his death. The US will not see the kind of regime change that we saw in the Soviet Union as a result of the dying off of the Old Guard. Cuba will continue to be the thorn in the foot of America.
The only way to make Cuban more open to America is to restore full relations with them. Open up trade, make it a tourist destination, get American dollars flowing into the country. Money is power. Money creates change. Tourism makes makes allies.
