Hi, I'm wondering what states have alligators and what states have crocodiles. I tried looking it up online but I found conflicting info and for crocodiles, it was saying where specific varieties were found, not just where crocodiles live in the United States. I'm only curious because I've been having recurrent nightmares about them since I was like 5 or 6 and I thought maybe it would set my mind at ease to know where they are so I don't have to worry about them being anywhere near me. Thanks in advance. :)

Thanks for the responses. I know it's irrational of me to worry about getting attacked by an alligator or crocodile, but when you've had a recurring nightmare for 20 years, it's hard to just get over it. I feel much better now.

The American Crocodile are only found in Florida.

The American Alligator is known to occur in Alabama , Arkansas , Florida , Georgia , Louisiana , Mississippi , North Carolina , Oklahoma , South Carolina , Texas.

Hope this helps and that you're not in the same state as where they occur.

Florida is the only place in the world with alligators and crocodiles, makes us special, doesn't it?

Florida, Georgia, Lousiana, Alabama, South and North Carolina, extreme eastern Texas and extreme southeastern Oklahoma, there you go.

Now, something else to keep in mind. Here in Florida, you are literally more likely to be attacked and killed by a dog than by an alligator. As a matter of fact, dogs kill more people here in Florida EVERY YEAR than alligators have in 50 years.

There is only ONE recorded fatality of a human from an American Crocodile here. This was because of the following:

In the 1920's or '30's, there was surveying going on in south Florida, I want to say for what's now U.S.1, but I could be wrong. Two surveyors were out surveying, one had a rifle, the other had a camera, they came across a crocodile, the one with the camera said, "Shoot it and I'll take your picture with it." So the other guy did. But the croc wasn't as dead as they thought it was. The skin of this croc is on display at the Florida Museum of Natural History.

But there were three fatalities by alligators last year! Oh, there were, weren't there? Ok, don't get drunk and take Xanax and then wander around by the water. (They're not even 100% sure that girl was conscious when she was grabbed.) Don't rent a canoe at a place that has signs that say "No Swimming on Canoe Run" and decide to swim on the canoe run anyway. And I believe the third was also a case of drinking a little too much and deciding to go swimming.

If you find yourself in alligator habitat, keep your brain together, and remember that they are just as nervous of you as you are of them. 95% of Florida's alligator attacks are linked to feeding. Fed alligators associate people with food and lose their fear, causing them to approach and get themselves in trouble. The other 5% are nesting females or territorial males during courtship and breeding seasons.
