1.) You CAN ask Morrisons to give you a reference - but would you WANT to!?
2.) It is not illegal for them to refuse to give a reference - what law would that be breaking? However, they probably would give you a reference if another employer asked.
3.) It is most definitely NOT illegal/unlawful for them to give you a bad reference. The only legal requirement is that it is honest and factual. If they feel you are a bad employee, then that is what the are duty bound to state in your reference.
The Data Protection Act does NOT allow you to see a reference for exactly this reason.
If I were you I'd use another previous employer as a reference and hope that the matter does come up at interview. If it does you will have to explain it away as best you can (e.g. difference of opinion etc).

It is illegal to give a bad reference. To avoid any form of litigation companies will only give the dates of employment. This includes employees that leave on good terms as well.
Some seeking answers on a reference will ask the former employer if they would hire the employee again. Some HR departments find even this question open for litigation as well and won't answer it. Others will.
Your best bet for a reference is from an individual at Morrisons, and not from the company itself. Were there any supervisors who approved of your work? Ask them personally to write a letter.

They are entitled to refuse to give a reference, and they don't have to explain why they refuse.
A "Bad Reference" is a bit tricky:
They must be truthful, they cannot give false or misleading information.
They cannot say something that could be taken as Detrimental.
If you were sacked, they may or may not disclose why, but at least they could confirm you worked there.

No employer is required to give you a reference. They are required to tell a potential employer that you did, indeed, work there, the length of time you worked there, and what your salary was. They can inform the potential employer that you were terminated, but most employers don't go into details.
You can't force someone to recommend you for a job that they don't feel they honestly give.

I think they have to give you a reference, but it has to be honest so if you got sacked they will say why. This might not be a good thing for your job application. I'd leave it out altogether.

Most UK companies don't give bad references.
If you were sacked, and they are asked for a reference, they may just limit it to confirmation that you "were employed from (date) to (date) as a (job title)".

Depends on what country you are working in. Within the United States companies rarely disclose anything outside of:
The dates you worked for them
Your title while you worked for them
And if you choose your hourly wages
Companies tend to not to disclose anything outside of that so they don't get sued. Below is link explaining why companies shouldn't give private information out.

They do not have to supply you with anything other than your start/finish dates, which should be on your P60.
Don't expect to get a job anywhere decent if you couldn't hold down a job at Morrison's though. You must have really screwed-up to get the push from there..
