A hot war is direct fighting between the two opponents and war is declared. For example, WWI and WWII and among many others.

A cold war is a war that is undeclared. The Cold War from 1947-1989/1990, compromised of the tensions that the U.S. and the USSR had. It included difference in political ideologies and militaristic and technological arms race.

The term "Cold War" was coined to describe the competition between the US and the West against the Soviet Union and its dependencies.

It was a "Cold War" because the principals never fought directly against each other, the wars were fought by proxies.

In this context, a "Hot War" would have been fought in Europe by the Soviet Bloc on the one hand and Nato on the other. That would have been WWIII.

The Cold War was between the United States and the Soviet Union. It was characterized by each of the two nations supporting opposite sides in a series of small conflicts that were quite "hot". It was also characterized by each nation providing economic support to other governments in an effort to sway them to one side or the other.

Cold war generally refers to a state of tension where there is no direct conflict between the nations involved, but each nation may be involved in armed conflict with one or more nations that is supported by their opponent. It may also involve both sides being armed camps staring across a border at each other (as in the Korean peninsula).

A "hot" war is one in which both sides are directly shooting at each other.

A cold war is when you don't try to kill somebody, but rather threaten them. A hot war is when the sh&^ really starts hitting the fan, and you try to kill the enemy.
