I believe its the AAP that doesn't routinely advise cord blood banking unless you already have a child who could use it. The cost outweighs its potential use, plus it may not be worthwhile in the future because they freeze it. A public bank is a better option. Anyone would be able to use and its usually free. That's what I'm considering. Hope that helps.

Cord Blood banking can be a good thing if your next child or this baby is in need of bone marrow, its not used for cloning as the 1st poster stated.
However, the cost is very very very high to bank cord blood for you own use.

We're thinking about it for our next. Just read the article on the woman who went without chemo when she was pregnant (found out she had leukemia) and died about 6/7 months after giving birth(healthy baby girl) the article mentioned something about them looking for a cord blood transplant with no luck. Kind of hit home, but have no idea where the link is to post it.

Well, It sounds like a good idea...if you have milllions. I called and asked a few questions:---the price: ranges from $1500-3000 a month. What happens if your child never gets sick, or anyone else?.... do you get the money?--no, its just like an insurance thing, you just lose it. As in using it for someone else, why spend $3000 a month on a stranger? I mean, if you are going to save $3000 a month, you might as well just save the money up in the bank and use it toward hosptial bills for better healthcare if it is needed. With the right amount of money even AIDS can be cured....just ask magic johnson.

I've seen lots of answers here about how expensive it is. We did it with our second child and and it only cost about $200 for the collection kit, and $50 per year storage fee. That's a small price to pay for the peace of mind that it gives. We store ours with Cryo-Cell International: www.cryo-cell.com

I didn't. It was expensive. Also, there are special instructions for saving the cord blood. If the hospital doesn't do it right, they can't save it. It sounds like a bunch of hooey to me!

I've heard that there is like a 1 in 1000 chance that you'll actually need it.. so that's not worth the cost in my opinion..

it is a good idea and yes it is expensive...we did it and now we have the security knowing that if one of our children gets seriously sick, they can use the cord blood and help them get better
