There was a period from about 1976 to 1982 when his career hit the skids. he put out about 5 albums, but without Bernie taupin, they all had very flat sales.
When he and Bernie got back together, they cranked out Too Low For Zero and he had his "comeback"

He had a short melt down in the 70's when his boyfriend left him.
