It was on the major media and if major racial and sexual insults are allowed, they'll be all over cable and broadcast tv. Imus has been trying to degrade our airwaves for years; he's just an older Howard Stern who happens to be interested in politics and sports instead of bimbos.
There have been numerous campaigns by social conservatives to clean up rap music over the years.
Social conservatives should be on the side of getting Imus off the air, especially since he's a liberal. But perhaps the Republicans can hold more Southern votes by leaping to the defense of someone who slurs blacks and women athletes.

I don't think what Imus said is more offensive than "some" rap lyrics.
Many people talk about rap and the use of language in it. Bitchez and Hoez, and etc.,
the difference is, those songs have parentla advisory labels on them. They are not normally broadcast on the radio. You have to go out and purchase them to hear that.
Imus said his stuff on the public airwaves. There is no isolation to it.
I'm black, and personally I don't think it is that big of a deal. People should be able to say whatever they want.
We really put too much emphasis on words.
Let's remember... he's a damn radio jockey... not the President or anything.

What he said was indeed tacky! But also, it did put him in the public eye and gave him lots of publicity. Nothing is fair in this world anymore! Freedom of Speech is the excuse for anybody to say anything and the decent people of this world have to learn to tolerate it and teach our children to tolerate it also. We have to put up our guard against so much these days. Rap music(Certain kind) is for the ones that don't want morals, especially the songs of hatred, murder, rape and etc. The people that sing these type of songs have no respect for the women that they mention in their music so their music is no better than someone that makes these racial comments. I'm white but I can see how these girls' must feel. They have all worked so hard being part of a team and to have their glory just vanish so quickly by a few racist words. What a shame for this team! We are all to forgive. I think that Imus needs to be punished but not destroyed as a human being. They should give him what he didn't give them, mercy. That in my opionion shows the better for these girls' and what they need to do to represent their race of people.

Rap "artists?" are far MORE offensive than anything Imus has ever said, or ever will for that matter. At least he owns up his mistakes. He's what I call "a man."
And yes, "freedom of speech?" seems to based on one's race. Sad but true.

Its the context of it...putting it a beat makes it all right. Plus I can't follow rap without a lyric sheet anyways. Freedom of speech is great but let's not confuse commercialism here. Radio is commerce based on sponsors paying money to win over happy costumers...the sponsors don't want to pay for someone that's going to cost them sales. The government didn't shut him down...it was his own sponsors did. I hope you people understand that this was a business decision following the 11th Commandment...DON'T MESS WITH THE MONEY.

It isn't, but, Imos is a broadcaster in a position of, ahem, responsibility, and, is paid to entertain people about popular culture and politics. Rap singers are rebels and entertainers that use racism and hatred as a sword to attract listeners and fans.

It's because Imus is an old white guy ripping on black girls. Had it been a black guy ripping on white girls, it's wouldn't have even been reported.

This is a lame talking point that is being used by conservative radio and television personalities. Think of your own questions.

Yes, it is a double standard, but it is based on race. I am sure Sharpton and Jesse have problems with rappers too, but would not address them, as it would anger a lot of their supporters.
