I work at a franchise that requires a lot of time for little money in return. I want more freedom without giving up dancing. I was wondering how hard it is to be a freelance teacher (like teaching at schools)

Anybody had any success/drawbacks?

That depend on many things. If there are enough private studios around where you can teach then you have a lot better chance. Also, living in a highly populated rich area is a plus. Also, depends on how good you are, compared to the level of other professionals in your area. Less experienced teachers get some backup from franchise, stronger teachers don't need that backup at all. One of my former teachers used to work for Arthur Murray, she moved to an independent studio quite successfully. In addition to teaching experience she had strong competitive record and teacher's certifications. On the other hand, some of my friends who decided to turn pro when they were only Pre-Champ level at best, eventually found it easier and better for them to get hired by franchise type of studio, because they were competing for students with much stronger teachers.

Hooray for you for staying with the Arts! I can tell you from personal experience that teaching can be very profitable IF you stay up to date and learn correct positioning. Its alot of work and the best part is the success of your students. When you work for someone else, however, you never really get the full control an artist likes; I have moved on to becoming my own boss and starting my own studio.....lots and lots of dedication work, and money is needed if you do this...Ive been out of college since 2001 and opened the studio by default at this time in my life--someone I was going to teach for decided she wanted out. Its wonderful. An education will be critical for business minded people...keep that in mind. and GOOD LUCK

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! I have worked at a few different schools as an independent choreographer and it is fantastic. I feel like I bring something new to each studio but also come away with new techniques and teaching methods that I wasn't able to learn staying at one studio....The money is pretty good as well. I haven't worked at a franchise so I can't compare the two but can tell you that going from studio to studio is great! Good Luck with whichever you choose :)
