for one do not watch a lot of movies or read for pleasure until you are finished. sometimes unconciously people pick up characters, wording or facts and incorporate them not knowing they might have heard that line somewhere else or read about a similar character. In all honsety though as long as your idea is ORIGINAL and not a spin-off it should not be an issue. DO YOUR RESEARCH!

If you mean how do you avoid plagiarizing someone else's work, this is simple: create only original writing in your own words and voice.

If you mean how do you avoid being plagiarized, there's little you can do except keep records of all your work. Date everything you write. Keep a file of your work, including all your rough drafts - never throw those away as they are proof of your creative process. If you're extra paranoid, you can add the word "Copyright" (or the copyright symbol © ), the date and your name, but that's not necessary and considered amateurish in the publishing industry.

Also considered amateurish and unnecessary: mailing your work to yourself and never opening the envelope. Never let anyone convince you to do this - it's a waste of time and not necessary.

Also unnecessary: Purchasing copyright through the US Copyright office. It's an expensive thing to do and considered amateurish, as well.

Once you create original writing, it's yours. Just keep up your files and records.

Best wishes!

Simple, just use all your own ideas and do not copy nor use specific ideas from someone else, without giving that person credit. If you want to use someone elses ideas, mentionsomething like "As Thomas Jefferson suggested in his book ..." That'll take care of it. If you use your own ideas you don't have to worry about it, at all.

Make sure no lines, situations, or characters are copied directly word for word from another published work.

Just learn how to hide your sources. It is not plagiarism if there is no other similar identifiable source.
