My son gets nose bleeds a lot I always make him hold his head forward between his knees( because if you lean back, you may swallow the blood. This can cause nausea, vomiting .)
I have him put ice packs on the back of his neck and on his nose, and pinch his nose for a few minutes, if the nose bleed is bad, I soak a towel in rubbing alcohol and wrap an ice pack with it and hold that to the back of his neck and it almost always works real quick! Good Luck!

Always forward.

If you get a nosebleed, sit down and lean slightly forward. Keeping your head above your heart will make your nose bleed less. Lean forward so the blood will drain out of your nose instead of down the back of your throat. If you lean back, you may swallow the blood. This can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Use your thumb and index finger to squeeze together the soft portion of your nose. This area is located between the end of your nose and the hard, bony ridge that forms the bridge of your nose. Keep holding your nose until the bleeding stops. Don't let go for at least 5 minutes. If it's still bleeding, hold it again for 10 minutes straight.

You can also place a cold compress or an ice pack across the bridge of your nose.

I hold my forward and put some tissue to stop the flow. I think I would choke or panic if ran down my throat.

Forward! Pinch the top part of your nose and it will help to slow it down too.

If you tilt backwards the blood is going backwards and towards the throat. Nasty!

I usually tip forward, I'd rather it ran out my nose then down my throat. Hate the taste of blood.

a couple of weeks ago, someone told me to hold my head forward to keep the blood from draining back, but my grandmother told me to hold my head back to stop the bleeding.

lol back silly...
It helps slow the flow and gives the blood a fighting chance to clot....which stops the flow.

Farward is what people do while it is bleeding....because they don't want it to run down their throat...it will not stop the flow though.
