I live in an 1850's building with a fireplace in the basement and first floor. I am using the one in the basement. Usually it is working fine, but when I stir it, or if I put another log on it, the smoke stops going up the flu and billows out into my apartment, filling it with smoke. This goes on for about 15 to 20 minutes until it corrects itself. Why does it do this? It is like the flu is closed, but it is clearly not, I have looked up in and I can see that it is fine. How do I stop this from happening?

Strange as it sounds, it would appear that you are temporarily stopping the heats upward flow when you stir or add a log. Same principle as lighting and holding a piece of paper in the fireplace before lighting the fire. This starts a draft to get the smoke going upwards. Your place may be "tight" also and you need to crack a window to furnish additional air to assist the updraft.

Your fireplace may no thave sufficient "draw" -- meaning the updraft that pulls th esmoke up the chimney. A temporary solution is to open an outside window or door a bit, anytime you light the fire or stir it. This will create more updraft. Long run you should ask a chimney expert if there is anything he can do to improve the updraft. Good Luck.

Gail is your angel amidst all hell. Not everyone has a Gail or an angel in one's life. Yet even for much smaller things, we can feel gratitude. Feeling gratitude helps us overcome trials and tribulations. It is a really neat thing! Solidarity is also a very neat thing. There should be more solidarity in today's world, and more loyalty to our friends. Less selfishness. If we could understand that we are all one, there would not be so many divisions and splits, and hurts and tears!!! Thank you for your story. It is uplifting! God bless you always!

Are you sure the flue is open? Get a flashlight and look up to see if it's really open. They also could be something caught in the chimney like a nest or an animal.

Open a window across the basement. It sounds like the fireplace needs more air to draw properly.

It is not drawing like it should--if the flu is open and good the chimney needs to be cleaned and don't wait--you could get a fire and it is not pleasant.
