I didn't mind losing mine. And you don't have to. When you get married, you have the option of not taking his last name or he can even take yours. It's more a choice now than a requirement.

One of the most important aspects in the Spanish system of surnames is that the women never, ever lose their last names. They have exactly the same surnames as their brothers. When a woman marries she simply adds the last name or names of her husband.

Unless they are the last namesakes for their families I don't see a reason why they should keep their last names unless they are famous. I would NEVER marry a woman who didn't feel like my last name wasn't good enough for her to take. Call me old fashioned by I just believe some things are better left the way they are (plus it's one of the only things men get on their wedding days:). I believe on big reason women have stopped taking surnames these days is because MARRIAGES DON'T LAST! Think about if Jennifer Lopez took every last name in all her marriages! But once again ultimately it is her choice just like everything else.

A woman doesn't have to anymore. However, I WANTED to lose my surname, well, not really but was really proud to take on my husbands name. It's a personal choice!

Women shouldn't have to, but most men appreciate it when they do. It shows a form of utmost respect and pride (not necessarily submission, there is a difference) to the husband.
Here in the South, we believe that while the man is to treat his woman with the utmost respect and love, he is also to be the moral, spiritual, and standing leader of the home--something most in the north can't understand.

I don't think they should, it's dumb. Makes things less confusing though I guess. If the woman changes her name, the child and parents will all have the same name.
If I ever decide to get married, which is doubtful, I'd like to keep my name or hyphenate probably.

You legally don't have to. It is usually by choice. I even know of one male who took on his wife's surname because he hated his own last name.

well, if we kept adding names together then eventually everyone would end up with super long last names.. it's tradition for the couple to take the man's last name, but occationally the couple will take the woman's last name.. but only if the man is a complete pansey..

I think women should choose whether or not they want to.
I did because my maiden name SUCKED and I was teased about it for 27 years!
