I live in an apartment with a sprinkler system. From time to time the fire inspector will come in to make sure they are working properly. It's always with my landlord and always with at least a days written notice.

i have never heard that but i think they make the rounds to make sure that there is nothing that may cause a fire (like fabric on ceilings, something blocking windows and doors that can be an emergency exit. i dont know if they fine you or not. might have to look into it.
