Build-aBear workshop is a good one. Depending on the age and what they like you could also get one for a video game store or a book store. Then again, there are always the regulars like Target and Walmart.

For a girl... Justice or Limited Too or a certificate for a manicure or hairstyle at a kid's spa.
For boys or girls Target, Chuck E Cheese, a certificate for a paint ball or laser tag game - if the boy is into it a certificate for a hair style (some might like highlights or streak in their hair - depending on age).

Obviously, age makes a big difference. If they are about to enter their "tween" years, then I would go with a Valley National Bank Certificate. This lets them shop anywhere. But let's say they are seven or eight. Then I would choose a video game store (if they are a boy) and maybe Blockbusters or a book store. Hope this helps.

How about a children's museum, aquarium, or something interesting like that if there is something near by?
Or, things to DO -- like one of those rock climbing places, miniature golf, batting cages, that type of thing. Or, something as simple as a movie theater.
Of course, you have to be sure the parents will be able to take them, or volunteer to take them yourselves.
A gift card to a nice bookstore is also great, I think.
Oh, and for a girl -- a manicure maybe.

Borders Books. Or any other bookstore that also sells DVDs and CDs. Then a child can choose, but will be choosing from among things which are more mentally stimulating than ordinary toys.

NOT A CLOTHES STORE!! DON'T DO THAT TO THEM!!! But a good idea would be a superstore like Walmart or K-Mart. (I'd reccomend Walmart). I probably sound sort of lame, but kids will buy like anything from there, and they have everything. Another good idea would be this: some ice cream parlors have like coupons you can buy for "1 free sundae" or others. If you get a kid this, they'll love it!

Please tell me which insensitive creep would give a kid for his birthday a gift certificate? This particularly is the day a kid waits for the whole year, and that is something obvious for anyone who cares.
So you most probably ought to give him something he'll always remember, kids usually give hints in advance; he knows what he wants. If it's too expensive, don't let him know you guessed, and don't try to imagine if you're in his shoes, just make a wild guess. Share him his birthdays while you can.

How about Target of Wal Mart. You can give them a gift card for anywhere. Why don't you try just a Visa gift card that they can use anywhere Visa is accepted.
