The day crack biochemist and future Nobel Price winner Linus Pauling attends the last day of the Ninth Triennial Solvay Conference at the Institut International de Chimie Solvay in Brussels. He had to cancel a previous trip to a scientific conference in England, because his passport was withheld by the State Department, on suspicions that he had Communist sympathies. Because of that, he never had access to the high quality X-ray diffraction photographs of DNA taken by Rosalind Franklin, and James D. Watson and Francis Crick win the race to publish the correct structure of the DNA molecule a few days later.
