You can definitely find both!
8th Grade Math teacher - kids loved him!! Gave little homework, reviewed for tests using the actual test, talked about sports all of the time. Teaching skills - debatable! I subbed in his class for 3 days (Tennis championships.. he was with the team) These students could do nothing without the aid of a calculator. They could use a graphics calculator no problem, but they could not graph the equation "x+1=y" by hand!! Even long division was a push for them. And this was a prealgebra class!!

College Calculus professor - toughest old bird on earth!! Class was rough, expectations were high, no slack was given to anyone. We all hated her, but, man.... did we all learn a lot! You understood what you were doing when you left class each session. She made it real and usable and important to us.

are you not a popular teacher but think you are good?

I had a religion teacher who had the dumbest rules and the worst attitude and made you feel like SH**. But -- she was smart and I learned a lot, yet it wasn't worth it in my opinion.
In my opinon, a good teacher is one that can make the lesson being taught interesting and keep it relaxed in the classroom.
Now there are some teachers who are popular but not good teachers. Thats a fact of life ---- some are so easy or easy-going that students can feel comfortable with them rather than intimidated by them.
