Any one can be assassinated regardless of importance it is the style of killing rather than what the actual act is. ...... Shadow Stalker

good question. I think any government official or politically active person killed for political reasons would be considered to have been assassinated.
So the next question is: how important does a politician have to be before it is worth it for someone to murder (assassinate) them.

An assassination is the murder of a political figure. Although normally high profile (otherwise not worth assassinating!) it doesnt matter what their personal importance is.

A person with a high profile such as prominent politician, religious leader or wealthy businessman is assassinated when killed while ordinary persons are just considered murdered.

The word assassinated is not limited to famous people. It can also describe the method of killing, if the murder is done in a methodical, or ritualistic way.

Probably about as famous or rich as those considered eccentric, rather than crazy.
