Farmers in the south west of Ireland are calling for Wild Deer to be culled, as they fear their livelihood could be damaged by the deer breeding with their cattle.
Their representative body claims there have been reported incidences of this happening in the past but I cant find any.

I have to be honest, I am trying very hard to suppress my laughter at this idea. No, cattle and deer can not interbreed. They are not even vaguely related to each other. Its like asking if men and cats can interbreed.

I am not against culling deer, as there is a big overpopulation problem, at least in the United States, but not because of cows!

At one time I would have agreed with the above comments until I was sitting outside one morning and saw a baby beer (bovine and deer) run down the pavement in front of my house. It was bigger than a baby deer and was piebald (dappled brown and white like a cow) It had a huge nose as a cow does and it's legs looked like they were backwards from the knee joint down. Its facial features were a mix with deer ears and it was s tout. It was not a piebald deer but a beer. I ran after it in amazement but it disappeared into the woods.

Only with their parents' consent.

OK, OK, no they can't. Their chromosomes are not closely compatible. They are about as close as bears and dogs.
Frankly, I would have thought farmers would be happy for cattle to breed with dear, imagine a huge steer that had meat that tasted like venison. They would be very hard to catch though.

Not that I know of, mate... totally different species.

Edited to add:

I found this page on "bovine hybrids", and it mentions crossbreeding between cattle and yaks and cattle and water buffalos, ... but no mention of deer:

Definetly, any animal with antiers or horns has the capability of crossbreeding.
