The question is very appropriate and this writer is of the opinion that although the Democratic process has set in well in our country, the Political Parties are yet to reach levels needed to drive the nation's growth as desired.
As mentioned above, although we have a Democratic system, it is sad that we do not have the TWO MOST IMPORTANT NEEDS OF "PARTY" BASED DEMOCRACY.
# The NEED for Men and Women of VISION, MISSION and IMAGINATION
# The NEED for DEMOCRATICALLY FUNCTIONING PARTIES.
As long as Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru was there in Indian Politics, he provided the first of these: Personality of Vision, Mission and Imagination - although his attempts to create ground level Democratic functioning did not succeed during his period, in spite of all efforts. And, alas! After his death the void is too much. And, added to this despondent situation is the state of affairs in the TWO MAIN POLITICAL PARTIES: THE CONGRESS and THE BJP. While the Congress is today filled with the "filthiest" and most incompetent of persons who have only their VULGARITY OF SYCOPHANCY and addiction to Power through any means - as their "strengths", the pathetic situation of the BJP, being dictated by the MOST OUT DATED AND FOOLISH "IRRELEVANCE" OF SO-CALLED HINDUTVA, DICTATED BY SOME IMBECILE "BRAHMACHARIS" OF NEAR MADNESS LEVELS, demolishes that party (filled with SOME OF THE BEST STALWARTS OF MODERN DAY INDIA) to naught. This DEGENERATION OF THE TWO MAIN PARTIES in our polity has offered MAXIMUM SCOPE FOR JOKERS, BROKERS, MAFIAS, MIDDLEMEN, GOONS, THIEVES and all other SOCIAL OUT CASTES to drum up themselves into the various other SPLINTER AND REGIONAL PARTIES, all fishing in troubled waters. The net result is:
While on the one hand we have an apparent (unrealistic) economic development phenomenon, the NEED FOR BALANCED GROWTH IN A COUNTRY, WHERE 650 MILLION PEOPLE LIVE IN THE VILLAGES BESET WITH POVERTY, ILLITERACY, DISEASE, SOCIAL DISCRIMINATION and IN CONDITIONS OF SQUALOR AND DEPRIVATION... is OBLITERATED BY THAT VERY SAME UNREALISTIC GROWTH. And these are the 650 million people who work day in day out, under trying circumstances and under the most unpredictable climatic changes and variations, to create the FOOD THAT WE INDIANS EAT, DRINK and make merry with. Yet, NOT EVEN ONE GOVERNMENT AFTER NEHRU DID ANYTHING REAL TO IMROVE THE TECHNOLOGICAL INPUTS NEEDED FOR THE FARMERS' CAUSE...resulting in borrowed funds, borrowed fertilizers, borrowed seeds and every thing that go into the productivity in farmlands. The so-called subsidies have only been useful to the middlemen, mafias, goons and other unscrupulous Government officials, in collusion with the Most inhuman quality Politicians - all of who have combined together to LOOT OUR GRANARIES, and in the process THEY ALONE HAVE FILLED THEIR COFFERS - leaving the poor farmers HELPLESS AND IN ABSOLUTE DEBTS. Added to this is the final nail on the coffin: the majority of our farmers are people who own very small acreage (less than Two ha of land per farmer..about 80%), and as our government and so-called scientists have merely been AGENTS OF THE WESTERN MODELS THAT ARE TOTALLY ALIEN TO OUR SYSTEMS AND NEEDS, 100% OF THESE FARMERS GET INTO A SORT OF TRAP, OVER TIME. All these, followed by the absolute callousness of all our Governments (from 1965 onward to this day) have driven our farm communities to conditions of desperation and total deprivation. And, today we are witness to this unfortunate episodes of Farmer Suicides...one after the other, spreading like wild fire from palace to place.
This writer would suggest to the 350 million youngsters of this great nation to COME OUT OF THEIR SHELLS AND UNDERSTAND THESE DIRE NEEDS. AND TO ACHIEVE OUR POTENTIALS, THEY WOULD HAVE TO THROW OUT ALL THE PRESENT GANGSTERS, MAFIAS, JOKERS, BROKERS (who have entrenched themselves in Parliament and other legislatures, through the ballot), and all those who now sit at the helm of affairs, by default.

Political parties don't work for the country, they work to get there candidates elected - that's all. If you need other info take an American Government course and/or political science intro course. They will change your mind in how you think!!!!

Political parties are only interested to protect their organizations and business allies rather than helping the country.

No matters how many or how few parties there are . There will always be a few that think different that the others in the same party . To not have this in any government is to have a communistic government . Where all people are to think one way or face prison .

:/ Political parties work for themselves. They really are more interested in gaining and retaining power than in what is best for the country...and that is BOTH major parties.

Your question is rhetorical and was discussed by George Washington in his farewell speech where he warned against the formation of political parties for the very reason that their interests would run against the national interest.

Absolutely not! They work to get reelected so they can collect big bucks for a limited amount of work and great retirement benefits. They do not give the people what we need and want. All of them are superb bullshit artists who promise the world and deliver crap. There may be 10 truly honest senators and congressmen who are for the people and only partially for them selves.

It depends on your personal point of view, and to
which area of government your referring to. State
and local politicians do what they do with ulterior
motives: they have more reason to do good things
for their districts than someone in the House of
Congress, or any other politician in Washington,
D.C. (With politicians in Washington, D.C., it is
more a matter of "teamwork within their party.")
And, besides, they are the politicians who have
already climbed that towering ladder of success.
Fact is, all big-name politicians--of each & every
party affilliation--were virtual unkonwns at the start
of their careers.
