Decimal coinage started in Great Britain in 1971, so that being the case, the 1972 penny had on the obverse Queen Elizabeth II and on the reverse a crown on a gate with chains and the words new penny. So yes they did make a penny in 1972 so there is such a thing. In 1982 the word new was dropped .

Hi Julian, welcome to numismatics. I checked and there are no pennies dated 1972 from Great Britain. There are, however, decimal pennies dated 1971 and 1973-present, but I guess you already know. For your info, there hasn't been any English coins since 1708 after the merger of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland in 1707.
