Go into the first newsagent you see and get a copy of the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide. It lists many restaurants in Sydney ranging from good to superb. Dining out in Sydney need not be expensive. Sydney also has many coffee shops that will sell you a decent cup of coffee unlike the dishwater you get at Starbucks.
Many Sydney restaurants are bring-your-own. Buy a bottle or two of wine at the local bottle shop and take it with you. Check with the restaurant.

That would be a real shame if you came to Sydney and ate only at the crappy old American cheap fast food joints. WHat a waste of time. Why would you go to HArd Rock Cafe or McDonalds or somewhere like that, when you can go and have something nice at Doyles? Or for something cheaper, a good counter meal at one of the pubs in Circular Quay or The Rocks - or the buffet at teh revolving restaraunt in Centrepoint Tower - these are all toursity.
I think you would severely miss out on experiencing what a new country has to offer if you chose to eat at the places you have at home.
There are so many great restaraunts and places to eat that you should try them - you should even go on a Captain Cook Cruise around the harbour - they have dinner cruises, what a great way to see Sydney.
Sydney has world class restaraunts and cafes and you would choose to eat a cheeseburger at Hard Rock Cafe??

Sydney is a harbour city - look for nice fresh seafood. But it has many many nice restaurants catering for all budgets. You just need to go out for a walk and find one that you like.
If you come all the way here only expecting the same restaurants as what you have in the USA then you might as well eat at MacDonalds.

I like "The Black Stump" for good ole steak. (it's a tree that was hit by lightning). Franchises around the city.
also try Burger King or Hungry Jacks, I'm not so keen on Maccas.
Starbucks, of course.
Some good pizza in the Italian shops.
I don't know anything about upmarket restaurants.

Hi, and a big welcome to Sydney. It's Autumn at the moment so soon as the sun sets, it gets quiet cool. So forget to bring some warm clothes.
I think you are going to be very happy with the choice and quality of our restaurants while you here. I have been to the USA quite a few times and found most of the restaurants are similar to the ones like where you come from, we have Chinese, Italian, Mexican, French, Thia and so on.
We also have the fast food chain like McDonald's, Hungry Jack's which is a franchisee of Burger King, KC Hard Rock Cafe to name a few.
If you go to McDonald's you will find you have the normal things to choose from like Big Mac burgers plus a lot of other healthy choices like low fat salads.
When ordering your meal the Entree is not the main meal like you are use to. The entree here is the smaller course that precedes the main meal. You guys call in the Appetiser.

There is a great selection of restaurants, bars and nightclubs at Cockle Bay Wharf in Darling Harbour. During the day take a walk around the Rocks. The Rocks is a very old part of Sydney very close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
http://www.therocks.com/ While your there have a lunch at "Phillips Footer" Bar a Grill restaurant.
There are heaps of things to do in Sydney below is a list of some of the things to do.

Hope you have a great time while your here.
...........Several hours later here in Sydney.
I can't believe myself, I didn't think of this to tell you about Fighter Jets flights that you can experience yourself. You are paced at an US air force base in Japan with your husband and I wonder have you ever been given the change to fly a fighter jet yourself. (and I really mean you get to fly the jet yourself)
If you haven't you can do it here in NSW, you will need to hire a car for a day and drive to Williamtown Newcastle. ( That's were I did it, my husband gave it to me for an Wedding anniversary present)
I love flying. I use to fly for an airline that went out of businesses here in Australia. This present was so up my alley. Its the biggest rush you can ever experience yourself.
All I can do is give you the web sites to look at and I hope you have time chance to go out have the time of your life like I did.

Are you talking about chains like McDonalds, Hard Rock cafe etc? Most of the common ones we have.
But while you're here why don't you check out the international cuisine, there are so many fine restaurants for all tastes and budgets. :)
