No doubt that Earvin "Magic" Johnson is one of the greatest player in the NBA history but even I'm not a Jordan fan my answer is Michael Jordan.Jordan won the leauge's MVP honors a number of times and he also won six finals MVP during the bulls era.He makes the bulls undefeated in the championship. The bulls are 6-0 in championships. He also make his teammates such a great player such as Scottie Pippen,Toni Kukoc,Dennis Rodman etc.

I've seen Jordan play, Magic play, Bird play, Kareem, Shaq, Kobe, Tim...I've seen enough live NBA basketball, and still there is no doubt that MJ is the best...ever. Only him and Magic & Bird in my opinion did what "it took" to win.
They plugged in holes wherever needed. If it meant scoring...Magic would score 42 in the NBA Finals...if it meant rebounding...Bird would go and grab 18 of them...and if it meant guarding your team's best player and shutting him down...MJ would guard the likes of Joe Dumars, Kevin Johnson, Gary Payton, Clyde Drexler & John Stockton and take them out of games defensively.
But Jordan, and only Jordan was dominant on "both" ends of the court. For all Magic & Bird's greatness they did not dominate on defense.
Jordan is still the "man" like him or not.

one of the good things about being as old as I am is that I got to see Bill Russell play. Redefined the whole game. 14 Championships in 15 years (2 NCAA, 1 Olympic gold, 11 NBA) - hard to do better than that.

"Dawgwinfrey".....here's a great example of Jordan "guarding your teams best player and shutting him down"....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j8bhajfsok
This must have been one of the Jordan games you missed...lol
Jordan also had horrible luck trying to guard Magic Johnson, best evidenced in the 1991 NBA finals. After dominating him in game one, Magic put 3 quick fouls on Jordan in the 2nd quarter. Phil Jackson elected to then put Pippen on Magic, and moved Jordan over to guard James Worthy, who was playing on a sprained ankle. So much for Jordan's defensive prowess....lol
In answer to your question......Larry Bird was the best I ever saw.

I must be as old as Mr. info_police. Since I am also a big Bill Russell fan. However my choice still goes to M.J. as the best, with my second going to Oscar Robertson.
