If it is the Initial Hearing, you will plead either "Guilty" or "Not Guilty". Judges at Initial Hearings are almost always good about explaining what your options to be sure that you understand your rights as most people don't have an attorney present at an Initial Hearing.

Other factor are what the charges are, your age, and if have you ever been in trouble with the law before. In some cases you might be eligible for pre-trial diversion and if so, they Judge may put that out as on option when he asks you for your Plea.

If you plead "Not Guility" you will be asked if you have an attorney and if you say no, they will ask if you can afford an attorney and you say no, you will be referred to the Public Defender's office and have to fill out paperwork related to you income (if you are married, they will include the spouses income in the calculation also). You pretty much have to be well below poverty level in most states to qualify but you could ask.

If you plead "Guilty" the Judge may or may not sentence you then or advise of a separate Sentencing Hearing.

Just go to court and the court will appoint you a lawyer. The first time you go is called first appearance. But do make sure you show up lawyer or not or they will issue a warrant for you.

Tell the judge you couldn't find a lawyer you could afford in time for the appearance in court.

no you are fine, just ask for a public defender. Unless they have been contacted by an attorney, chances are they will have public defenders there to help you. Calm down, you are fine.
