Who told you that? Cleveland Ohio is the "so called Home" of rock & roll because of a d.j. named Alan Freed who bucked the system and got rock & roll air time on the radio, amidst much controversy and flack, Mr. Freed promoted the bands and did all he could to help the music and singers of rock get their due. His life was forever changed by it all, but so was the music industry. Detroit is home of the Motown Sound!

It is because of the Detroit audiences. It is a "Rock" city not home to Rock and Roll.

Rock bands from around the globe have all known that the Detroit audience could make of break them. Bands like the Rolling Stones always make a stop in Detroit. This relationship dates back to the famous Grande Ballroom. Another later example is when the Police gave a free concert in Detroit to thank the city for their enthusiasm - for helping boost them to the national/international stage.

even though i've been living in southeast michigan all my life, i have never heard detroit considered the home of rock and roll. rock and roll has a much more spread out origin, especially since it was influenced the most by the blues, which is everywhere. and even though cleveland is the home of the rock and roll hall of fame, it hardly played a major roll in the development of the genre.

Only people in Detroit make that claim. Michigan has a solid rock heritage (Seger, Kiss, Nugent, Grand Funk), but so do many other places.

i've never heard of detroit as the home of rock and roll, just motown. and motown is not rock & roll. it's more of a precursor to r&b.
