my overflow from the toilet has badlystainedbrickwork outside-any ideas how to get rid of it.

There are products like limeaway and others. I have taken steel wool to my toilet to get rid of the scale. A water softner would do the trick, I just haven't put one in yet.

..may help you. But, I feel that any acidic methods may lead to streaking.
You could also try a sand blasting attachment for a pressure washer, that way you can at least 'feather' the cleaned part into the uncleaned part.
