The Kite Runner is the first novel by Afghan American author Khaled Hosseini. Published in 2003, it is the first novel in English by an Afghan.
It a story about love, guilt, truth, and redemption. The story is about two boys growing up together in pre-Soviet Afghanistan until one betrays the other, after which he journeys through youth and adulthood, and war and peace, with guilt and shame.

It is a work of fiction but I think the author has drawn on his own experiences..it is a really great book..taking you into a world that is so completely foreign ...and gives you an understanding of the people he writes about...
