lim j Hi under normal conditions you can forget about L, & 2 gear .. Lets talk about a tran. with overdrive say a 4, 5, or 6 speed . In that final gear refered to as overdrive you are almost free wheeling . So when you let off the gas the car still has forward motion for a while.. This is where you get your best gas mileage in this gear .. 2 gear : can be used to down shift to slow the car with the engine . (like down shifting in a stick shift .) This also extends the life of your brakes .. Fact: the brakes on a stick shift that is down shifted at stops. Last much longer than brakes on a auto. 2 gear is also a pulling gear & control gear . Towing on a steep hill you may use 2 gear . And on snow or ice you have better control . ( no free wheeling )
Low gear is to move a very heavy tow from a dead stop & control . ( control such as a very ,very steep hill where you must go slow and keep control .) This may or may not have slippery conditions . Such as snow & ice .. I hope this is helpful .. Good luck ..

Some people think they get better performance if they manually shift the automatic (like hold it in L until they hit 'red line')
Some people use 2 for starting out on slippery surfaces, to there is less torque to spin the wheels
Some people use 2 when decending a hill (especially with a heavy load) so they won't have to ride their brakes all the way down.

L, or your low gear provides for more torque. when towing something or going up a steep hill, it is best to use this gear to get the car going. for example, if you were hauling a uhaul trailer. it is advised to turn on your overdrive (the button on the shifter) and start accelerating in L in order to effectively get the car rolling without ruining the transmisson

low and 2'nd gear are used for start towing and wheel control in bad terrian. Slippy roads (snow) is an application where going up a hill you would use 2'nd to keep your tires from spinning.
