I have 2.5 gal. tank with filter and one silk plant. I think my Betta would like more places to hide under and lie on. What types of plants have you found suited this type of fish? Suggestions and experiences are appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The tank has been setup with him in it for four months and he's doing great, so it's not new. I just want ideas and experience as to what works best for others.

My newest betta is in a 5 gallon hex tank with two silk plants and two banana plants (see photo - http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=791) - these have low light requirements and are easy to grow. If using live plants, rinse them very well and be on the lookout for hitch-hiking snails!

I think he likes the silk ones best - he pulls the ends of the silk and frays the leaves to entertain himself.

10 gallons is a good size, just make sure the filter can handle at least 10 gallons. I don't know if betta's prefer any specific type of plants, but if you go to a good pet store that deals with live aquarium plants they can help you with the right ones. You will probably want a slow growing plant like anubias and I have heard moss balls can be quite interesting and will pick up debris. Live plants will grow in both sand and gravel, that part is up to your preference. Some say gravel is easier to clean because the vacuum doesn't pick up the gravel and some say sand is easier to clean. Right now I have sand and amazon swords in my 20 gallon tank and gravel with artificial plants in my 10 gallon. I think because 10 gallon tanks are smaller you would be better off getting a plant that you can trim when it gets to tall so it doesn't just lay across the whole surface of the water. I remember seeing some like that, they grow fast though, at the aquarium store the other day, just can't remember the name of them at the moment.

Although bettas may survive in a bowl or small tank, they still have requirements. Surface area is one of them. They do need space to swim yet hiding places as well. You don't want to overcrowd the tank. Water lettuce if kept trim is great for the top of the tank. It floats and has roots. Keep the runners trimmed. He will also nibble on the plant to supplement his diet. There is a little chance of getting snails from the lettuce.

Plastic plant is better for betta! Live plants make too much dirt when the leaves die, esp. in a small set up.A few little pebbles or marbles are good to add.

Betas don't require much room. Silk plants are much better and easy to clean. Live plants can grow algae which can cause water issues! Betas don't move around much and often found on the bottom of the tank sleeping.. Betas however I found do like rock houses or a larger rock to sleep behind....
